Hostinger VPS Review

Hostinger VPS Review Is It Worth It

May 04 2026

Tech

I moved one of my test projects onto a Hostinger VPS to see whether the cheap price holds up when you need real server control. I ran it for several weeks, deployed a couple of apps, and pushed it under load. This review is about the VPS line specifically, separate from the shared and cloud plans I cover elsewhere.

Short version. Hostinger VPS is good value for developers and anyone who has outgrown shared hosting but does not want to pay enterprise prices. You get full root access, KVM virtualization, and an AI assistant for server tasks. It expects you to know your way around a server, so it is not a beginner product.

Who a VPS is for

You need a VPS when shared hosting runs out of room. That usually means a site outgrowing its resources, an app that needs a specific server environment, or a project that needs root access. If you are running a normal blog, you probably do not need this yet, and my Hostinger pricing plans guide will steer you to a cheaper shared tier.

VPS plans and pricing

Plan

vCPU

RAM

Approx intro

KVM 1

1 core

4 GB

$4.99/mo

KVM 2

2 cores

8 GB

$6.99/mo

KVM 4

4 cores

16 GB

$9.99/mo

KVM 8

8 cores

32 GB

$19.99/mo

The entry KVM plans undercut most of the market. As with all Hostinger pricing, the intro rate assumes a long commitment and renewal runs higher, so budget for that.

KVM virtualization

Hostinger uses KVM, which gives each VPS dedicated resources rather than sharing them with neighbours. In practice that means the RAM and CPU you pay for are yours. I did not see the resource contention you sometimes get on cheaper container based VPS products.

Performance under load

I deployed a Node app and a WordPress install on a KVM 2 and ran a load test. The server held steady up to a few hundred concurrent requests before response times climbed, which is in line with 2 cores and 8 GB of RAM. NVMe storage kept disk operations fast. For the price, the performance is strong.

Operating system and setup

You can deploy common Linux distributions or pick a template with software preinstalled, including WordPress, control panels, and app stacks. Setup of a fresh server took me about ten minutes including OS selection. The KVM dashboard in hPanel is clean and the AI assistant can generate server commands if you are unsure.

Root access and control

You get full root access. That is the point of a VPS. You can install whatever you need, configure the firewall, and manage services directly over SSH. With that control comes responsibility: server security and updates are on you unless you add a managed layer.

Security

Hostinger includes a Monarx malware scanner and a firewall, plus weekly backups, with snapshots available. Because you have root, you should still harden the server yourself. General server security practice is well documented in the OWASP guidance, which is worth a read before you expose anything to the public.

Backups and snapshots

Weekly automatic backups come included, and you can take a manual snapshot before a risky change. I took a snapshot before a major config change, broke the server on purpose, and restored from the snapshot cleanly in a few minutes.

What I liked

•       KVM gives genuinely dedicated resources at a low price.

•       NVMe storage keeps things fast.

•       Full root access with a clean management dashboard.

•       The AI assistant lowers the barrier for server commands.

See what's possible with Hostinger.

What could be better

•       It is self managed, so server upkeep is your job.

•       Renewal pricing climbs from the intro rate.

•       Not suitable for a beginner with no command line comfort.

VPS vs Cloud hosting

If you want more power than shared hosting but you do not want to manage a server, Hostinger's Cloud plans are the managed middle ground. The VPS is for people who want control. I break down the difference in the Hostinger Cloud and VPS hosting overview.

Is it worth it

For a developer or a technical user who needs root access on a budget, yes. The KVM resources are real and the price is among the lowest I have tested. If you do not want to manage a server, pick Cloud instead. Grab the current discount on my Hostinger coupon code page, and see the full host writeup at Hostinger review.

Managed vs unmanaged in practice

Hostinger VPS is self managed by default, which means you handle OS updates, security patches, and server configuration. If that sounds like work you do not want, the VPS is the wrong product and a Cloud plan is the right one. You can add management help, but the base product expects you to be comfortable in a terminal. Be honest with yourself about this before buying, because a neglected unmanaged server is a security risk.

Control panel options

You can run a VPS bare over SSH or install a control panel. Hostinger offers templates with panels preinstalled, including options for those who want a cPanel style interface on their server. I ran one server bare and one with a panel. The panel made routine tasks faster but used more resources. For a developer comfortable with the command line, bare is leaner.

Bandwidth and traffic

Hostinger VPS plans come with generous bandwidth allowances that suit most projects. Unlike some shared plans that throttle when you spike, the dedicated resources mean your CPU and RAM are yours to use fully. For a project with bursty traffic, this predictability is one of the main reasons to move off shared hosting in the first place.

When to choose VPS over Cloud

Pick VPS when you need root access, a custom server environment, or specific software that shared and Cloud plans will not let you install. Pick Cloud when you want more power than shared hosting without managing a server. The deciding question is control versus convenience. I cover the full split in the Hostinger Cloud and VPS hosting overview.

My experience running it

I ran a KVM 2 for several weeks hosting a Node app and a WordPress install. Setup took ten minutes, the dedicated resources held steady under my load test, and the snapshot feature saved me when I broke a config on purpose to test recovery. The thing I would warn a new VPS user about is security: with root access, hardening the server is your job from minute one, and an unpatched VPS is a target. If you are ready for that responsibility, the value here is excellent.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hostinger VPS good?

Yes, for technical users. It uses KVM virtualization for dedicated resources, includes NVMe storage and full root access, and prices below most competitors.

Is Hostinger VPS managed or unmanaged?

It is self managed. You get root access and control, which means server security and updates are your responsibility unless you add management yourself.

How much does Hostinger VPS cost?

Entry KVM plans start around $4.99 a month on a long term commitment, scaling up to $19.99 a month for 8 cores and 32 GB of RAM. Renewal runs higher than intro.

Do I need technical skills for a VPS?

Yes. A VPS expects command line comfort and basic server administration. If you do not have that, a shared or Cloud plan is a better fit.

Does Hostinger VPS include backups?

Yes, weekly automatic backups are included, and you can take manual snapshots before risky changes and restore from them.
