Vessi Shoes

Vessi Shoes Review

Dec 26 2025

Lifestyle

Every shoe brand claims comfort. Vessi claims something more specific: knit sneakers that are fully waterproof, lightweight, and breathable enough to wear without socks on a warm day. That combination of attributes sounds contradictory waterproof and breathable are typically opposite ends of a material spectrum.

Vessi resolves this with a proprietary knit technology called Dyma-tex, which the brand describes as a waterproof knit membrane woven directly into the upper. After extended testing across wet commutes, light rain, and deliberate puddle tests, here is whether the technology works and whether the shoes are actually worth buying in 2026.

About Vessi

Vessi is a Canadian brand founded in Vancouver in 2018 by Tony Yu, David Doan, and Mikayla Wiebe. Vancouver, arguably the rainiest major city in North America, is the appropriate testing ground for a waterproof sneaker brand. The company went from a crowdfunding campaign to a globally shipping DTC brand within three years. Their core promise has not changed: fully waterproof knit sneakers that feel like regular sneakers.

The Waterproofing Technology

Vessi's Dyma-tex membrane is the central claim. Unlike Gore-Tex, which is a laminated membrane bonded to a separate outer material, Dyma-tex is woven into the knit structure of the upper itself. The theory is that this eliminates the breathability trade-off inherent in Gore-Tex's laminated construction.

In practice, the waterproofing is fully functional. Submerging a Vessi Weekend shoe in a shallow puddle for 60 seconds and walking through continuous rain for 30 minutes produces no interior moisture penetration. Water beads off the knit surface without soaking through.

The breathability claim is partially accurate. Vessi shoes breathe measurably better than Gore-Tex footwear at similar price points. They do not breathe as well as non-waterproof knit sneakers, the membrane adds thermal retention. In summer temperatures above 25°C (77°F) during active use, you will feel warmth. For walking commutes and casual everyday use, breathability is adequate.

Comfort and Fit

Sole and Cushioning

Vessi uses a dual-density EVA sole across most models. The cushioning is adequate for walking, competitive with comparable casual sneakers in the $100-$150 range. It is not an athletic performance sole. Runners who want to use these for jogging will find them insufficient. City walkers who cover 5,000–10,000 steps daily will find them comfortable throughout a full day.

Knit Upper Feel

The knit upper is uniformly comfortable, no break-in period, no pressure points, no heel blister risk. For buyers who have feet that are difficult to fit traditionally (wide, high instep, odd proportions), the knit construction accommodates variation better than molded synthetic uppers.

Sizing

Vessi runs true to size for most buyers, with a slight lean toward generous width. Wide-foot buyers frequently report that these are one of the only casual sneakers that work without discomfort from day one. Narrow-foot buyers should consider sizing down half a size.

Vessi Pricing

Vessi adult shoes run $125-$145 across the current lineup. Compared to Gore-Tex equipped shoes in the casual/trail hybrid space (which typically run $150–$250), Vessi's pricing is competitive. Compared to non-waterproof premium knit sneakers like Allbirds ($110–$145), Vessi adds a meaningful waterproof capability at a small price premium.

Who Should Buy Vessi Shoes?

Vessi is built for city-dwellers who live in genuinely wet climates, the Pacific Northwest, the UK, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and any city where you face unpredictable rain across 6+ months of the year. The shoe solves a specific problem: looking presentable in a sneaker you can wear without worrying about rain.

Skip Vessi if you primarily need athletic performance (running, training, hiking), if you live in a consistently dry climate where waterproofing is irrelevant, or if you want broad colour and design variety. The Vessi catalog is clean but not expansive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Vessi shoes actually waterproof?

Yes. The Dyma-tex membrane in the knit upper is a legitimate waterproofing technology tested and confirmed through extended use. Water does not penetrate the upper in rain or shallow puddles.

Can you wear Vessi shoes without socks?

Yes. The knit interior is designed for sock-free wear. Many users prefer them this way, especially in warmer weather.

Are Vessi shoes good for hiking?

No. Vessi shoes are city shoes. The soles lack the lugs, stiffness, and ankle support needed for trail hiking. For light nature walks on maintained paths, they are adequate for actual trail use, get proper hiking footwear.

How do you clean Vessi shoes?

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. The knit upper responds well to gentle hand washing. Machine washing is not recommended as it can stress the knit structure.

Do Vessi shoes run true to size?

Generally yes. Wide-foot buyers may find them slightly generous. Narrow-foot buyers should consider going down half a size.

Are Vessi shoes worth the price?

For buyers in wet climates who want a waterproof everyday sneaker, yes. The $135-$145 price point delivers legitimate waterproofing, genuine comfort, and a clean aesthetic that works in most casual contexts.
