Ultrahuman Ring Size Guide

Verdict: Order the free sizing kit. Don't guess. Your ring finger and index finger probably aren't the same size you think they are, and a wrong fit ruins both comfort and sensor accuracy.

I ordered my first Ultrahuman ring in the wrong size. Size 7, based on a ring I already wore. It arrived, I put it on, and it felt fine at 2pm. By 9pm, my finger had swollen enough that the ring was uncomfortably tight. By 6am the next morning, it was loose again. Your fingers change size throughout the day. Temperature, hydration, salt intake, exercise, and hormonal cycles all affect finger circumference. A ring that fits perfectly at noon might not fit at midnight.

This isn't unique to Ultrahuman. It's physics. But because smart rings need consistent skin contact for accurate PPG sensor readings, fit matters more here than it does for a wedding band. A loose ring produces noisy heart rate data. A tight ring disrupts blood flow and becomes something you take off, which defeats the purpose.

Here's how to get it right the first time.

Step 1: Order the Free Sizing Kit

Ultrahuman ships a free sizing kit to your door. It contains plastic ring sizers in every available size (5 through 14). The kit ships globally, usually arriving within 5-10 business days depending on your location.

Don't skip this step. Online ring size charts, string-around-finger methods, and measurements from jeweler's rings are unreliable for smart rings. Smart rings are wider than standard jewelry bands, which means a size that works for a 3mm wedding band may not work for a 7mm health tracker.

The sizing kit is the same for both Ring AIR and Ring PRO. If you already know your AIR size, you can order the PRO in the same size without re-measuring.

Step 2: Wear the Sizer for 24 Hours (Minimum)

This is where most people rush and regret it. Don't try on a sizer for five minutes, decide it fits, and order. Wear it for at least 24 hours, ideally 48. Here's why:

Morning vs. evening variation: Your fingers are typically smallest in the morning (cold, dehydrated from sleep) and largest in the evening (warm, hydrated, active). The right size should feel snug but not tight in the evening and slightly loose but not spinning freely in the morning.

Exercise test: Wear the sizer during a workout. If your hands swell during exercise (most people's do), the ring should still be comfortable at peak swelling.

Sleep test: Wear the sizer to bed. A ring that's comfortable during the day can feel different when your hand is relaxed and possibly pressed against a mattress. If you wake up and the sizer has rotated significantly, it may be too loose for reliable overnight sensor contact.

Step 3: Pick the Right Finger

Ultrahuman recommends the index finger for optimal sensor performance. The index finger typically has better blood flow near the surface, which produces cleaner PPG signals.

That said, many users (myself included) wear it on the ring finger or middle finger. The trade-off is marginal. I've compared my data from 30 nights on the index finger versus 30 nights on the ring finger, and the sleep score and HRV readings were within 3-5% of each other.

Choose the finger where the ring feels most natural and least likely to interfere with your daily activities. Typing, lifting, and gripping are all affected by ring placement. If you type heavily, the index finger can feel obstructive. The middle finger is a solid compromise.

Note: your fingers are probably different sizes on each hand. Measure the specific finger on the specific hand you plan to wear the ring on.

Step 4: Between Two Sizes? Go With the Larger One

If you're torn between size 8 and size 9, go with 9. A slightly loose ring is always better than a slightly tight one.

Tight rings cause:

Discomfort that leads to removal (and lost data). Potential circulation restriction during sleep. Difficulty removing the ring after exercise or in hot weather.

Loose rings cause:

Slightly noisier sensor readings. More ring rotation on your finger. The sensor accuracy difference between a well-fitting ring and a slightly loose ring is minimal. The comfort difference between a well-fitting ring and a slightly tight ring is enormous, especially over 12+ hours of daily wear.

Common Sizing Mistakes

Measuring cold hands. If you size your finger on a cold morning, you'll likely order a size too small. Size when your hands are at normal body temperature.

Using a different finger. Don't measure your ring finger and assume your index finger is the same. Check both if you're undecided on placement.

Ignoring seasonal changes. Fingers swell more in summer and shrink in winter. If you're sizing in December, your summer fit may be tight. Err toward the larger size.

Assuming jewelry size translates. A size 7 in a standard thin band doesn't mean size 7 in a smart ring. The wider profile of a smart ring sits differently on the finger. Always use the Ultrahuman sizing kit, not a jeweler's measurement.

Pro Release Technology (Ring PRO Only)

One smart addition in the Ring PRO: ProRelease Technology. In a medical emergency, the Ring PRO can be safely cut off without risk of injury to your finger. Standard titanium rings are notoriously difficult to remove in emergency rooms. Ultrahuman engineered the PRO's unibody specifically to allow safe emergency removal. This doesn't change how you size the ring, but it's worth knowing that even a snug fit has a safety valve.

What If You Ordered the Wrong Size?

Ultrahuman offers exchanges for sizing issues. Contact their support team within the return window (check current policy on their website) and they'll ship a replacement in the correct size.

If you sized correctly with the kit but your finger changes over time (weight loss, pregnancy, seasonal changes), you'll need to order a new ring. Ultrahuman doesn't currently offer free resizing for existing customers, though trade-in credits can offset the cost.
