FlixBus UK luggage allowance and booking guide
Jun 24 2026
Every FlixBus fare includes one carry-on and one stowed bag free. Extra, oversized, or overweight bags cost a fee, and at the coach that fee is sometimes cash only. Booking is app-first and simple: pick your route, choose a departure, add a reserved seat if you want one, and manage the trip in the app. Stay within the allowance and you pay only the headline fare.
Free: one carry-on plus one stowed bag within size limits. Paid: extra, oversized, or overweight bags, sometimes cash only at the coach. Book through the app, keep valuables in your carry-on, label your stowed bag, and watch it at stops. Add luggage online in advance to avoid curbside hassle.
The free luggage allowance
A standard FlixBus ticket includes one carry-on bag and one stowed bag at no extra cost. The carry-on goes in the overhead area or under the seat in front. The stowed bag goes in the hold beneath the coach. Each piece has a size and weight limit. Stay within it and you travel free.
Go over, and you pay. Extra bags can be added for a fee, ideally online in advance, since space in the hold is not guaranteed and curbside payment is awkward. Oversized or overweight bags trigger a charge that the driver enforces at the coach.

Carry-on vs stowed: what goes where
Bag type | Where it goes | Rule of thumb |
Carry-on | Overhead shelf or under the seat ahead | Small enough to lift and stow yourself |
Stowed bag | Hold beneath the coach | Within the size and weight limit to travel free |
Extra bags | Hold, space permitting, for a fee | Add online in advance, do not rely on paying at the coach |
Personal item | On you or at your feet | Phone, wallet, documents, medication stay with you |
Oversized and extra bags
This is where most fees and friction happen. A bag beyond the size or weight limit costs extra, and there is not always a scale at the stop, which leads to disputes. Riders have been caught out by a slightly oversized bag and a driver who could only take cash. Measure and weigh at home, and add any extra bag online before you travel.
Bulky items like bicycles, skis, or instruments have their own rules and fees and may need to be booked in advance, subject to space. Do not turn up with a large special item unbooked and assume it will fit.
Carry a little cash Oversized-baggage fees at the coach can be cash only. A few pounds in your pocket means a borderline bag does not leave you choosing between paying somehow or being left behind.

How to book a FlixBus ticket
Search your route. Enter origin, destination, and date in the app or on the website. Compare a few departures for the best fare.
Pick a departure. Check the fare, the journey time, and the exact stop locations at each end. A central stop saves a connecting trip.
Add a reserved seat if you want one. Optional, for a small fee. On some partner coaches reservation is not available, and you take any free seat.
Add extra luggage if needed. Cheaper and surer to do this online now than at the coach.
Pay and get your ticket. Your e-ticket sits in the app. You show it when boarding.
Manage the trip in the app. Track the coach, and reschedule or cancel under the fare terms if plans change.
Reserved seating
FlixBus lets you reserve a specific seat for a small fee during booking. You view the seat map and pick, with the fee varying by seat type and trip length. If you do not reserve, you are assigned a seat or take any free one, so early boarding helps you sit where you want. On certain partner-operated coaches, reservation may not be offered.
Onboard amenities and what to expect
FlixBus coaches generally offer free WiFi, power sockets, extra legroom, and toilets. The WiFi is basic, fine for messaging and browsing, not for streaming, and can slow once you pass a data threshold. This is budget travel done reasonably well, not luxury. Set expectations accordingly and the experience holds up.
Track your journey in real time through the app using your booking. Coach status is more reliable in the app than guessing at the stop, especially if a departure runs late.
Luggage safety on board
Bags in the hold sit largely out of sight at stops, and theft, while uncommon, does happen on budget coach routes. Keep anything you cannot afford to lose in your carry-on, label your stowed bag clearly inside and out, and stay aware when the hold is open at intermediate stops. Travelling light is the simplest protection.

FAQs
How much luggage can I take on FlixBus for free?
One carry-on and one stowed bag free, each within FlixBus size and weight limits. Extra, oversized, or overweight bags cost a fee, best added online in advance.
What is the FlixBus luggage size limit?
FlixBus sets a size and weight cap on both the carry-on and the stowed bag. Stay within it to travel free. Measure and weigh at home, since a bag over the limit is charged at the coach and there is not always a scale.
Can I pay for extra FlixBus luggage at the coach?
Sometimes, but it can be cash only and space is not guaranteed. It is cheaper and surer to add any extra bag online when you book.
How do I book a FlixBus ticket in the UK?
Use the FlixBus app or website. Search your route and date, pick a departure, optionally reserve a seat and add luggage, then pay. Your e-ticket sits in the app and you manage the trip there.
Does FlixBus have reserved seating?
Yes, for a small fee during booking. You pick from a seat map. Without a reservation you are assigned or take any free seat, so boarding early helps. Some partner coaches do not offer reservation.
